People forget that Katrina hit the Mississippi Coast first. The levee flooded New Orleans and the 9th Ward the day after.
Nobody ever wrote about the way people all over Mississippi mobilized. Rednecks parked their trucks along the main roads, filled with supplies for the mainly black folks headed north. Food, ice, water, diapers, shaving cream, cat litter, pet food. I thanked one wearing a confederate flag bandana. He said, "Today, we're all brothers."
